Truly amazing man. The West produces nothing but ignorant hacks owned by their rapacious elites. If Putin is able to begin unraveling the iron grip of the Davos crowd, he will be remembered as one of the greatest leaders of all times.

Having listened to Putin speak before with an as-it-is-spoken translation(which are, at best, difficult to follow) I can say that he is without question what Americans call a ‘policy wonk.’ His mastery of a huge number of situations, in terms of what is actually going on, the problems, and the various ideas of how to tackle them, is breathtaking. And, in detail. So much detail that I do not have the necessary knowledge of my own to comprehend all or most of it. He is the opposite of how he is portrayed in the US. So much so, that, because of his academic style of speaking, for this non-Russia specialist, it gets pretty boring. After a good long while. As for climate change, the only reportage I have seen recently on Putin’s views made it seem he was trolling the German government over its de-emphasis of carbon-based energy. And, this seemed like trolling to me because, as Mark said, Russia is pretty much ground zero for the already visible effects of climate change. I recall seeing a documentary- maybe on RT America, maybe not- about 10 years ago that was so memorable that I recall three portions of it now. The first was a ship, Russian navy or merchant marine- on which all of the sailors were taking videos of the conditions in the Arctic Sea surrounding them. It looked as if they were sailing in a giant water dish into which a massive amount of Alka-Seltzer had just been dropped. Bubbles as far as the eye could see. It was methane, escaping from the melting permafrost on the sea floor. The second incident reported was of two little Russian boys, living north of the Arctic Circle, who had discovered a small sinkhole, maybe 18” wide, from which methane was emanating. Their reaction was to get some sticks and a matchbook and a bag of marshmallows, light up the methane, and have a marshmallow roast. Pretty adorable. However, within a few months the sinkhole had greatly expanded, and no one wanted to go near it, much less to set it afire. The third was truly heartbreaking. An elderly Russian woman, living in Siberia, was asked about the sinkholes and melting permafrost, and her response was, “we must have done something terrible to offend God.” I could hear in her explanation my own Greek Orthodox grandmothers saying exactly the same thing, if they had lived to see it. In truth, we were all told over 30 years ago, that once the effects of global warming/climate change had become visible and obvious, it would be too late to do anything to reverse it. So, I doubt that what Putin or anybody else thinks about it means anything at this late stage. However, it is good to know that anyone in his position takes it seriously enough to speak of it intelligently at length.

thank you for your commentary -- this was an amazing, critical conference that will not be openly discussed at all here in the U.S. - frankly, I doubt if our leaders would understand the nuanced language of an intelligent man of integrity and good education. Ukraine would be wise to look East for reparations and a cultural rebirth.

It was like a great, not-racist version of Wilson's 14 points

Western Culture(?), like others in the past, has been created and funded by conquest and looting (colonialism). As such, today we cannot comprehend the "Win-Win" model being proposed by Russia and China. We simply can;t do this even between allied countries, regions of the same country, or even within the same family! If there is an opportunity or profit, then that must be exploited.

WRT Climate change; I would suppose that Mr. Putin was just being pragmatic and understands that people have always worried about climate and weather. No amount of reasoning can convince an uneducated person away from a "Motherhood issue" Russians and specially the scientists have had a front row seat to the cycle of changes. So have many Westerners. But, it is so much easier and so much 'more profitable' to go along with the fear porn of the moment. Attached is a very good but not analytical video. The evidence provided clearly shows a cycle where the Arctic freezes and then warms again to spectacular abundance, which allows populations of large fauna that cannot live there now?

These shifts seem to occur very rapidly. How long the phases last, I can only guess. However the whole cycle seems to be 9,000 years? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BA1BKkwcjGg
