It is obvious that the Russian leadership really does not want to fight this war. That is no surprise, as the war was an intended outcome for the United States.

That said, Russian weakness and dithering in the conduct of that war have caused the West to waltz over red line after red line, to lose all fear of Russia, and as a result, to behave more and more recklessly.

Russia should have acted decisively from the outset, in order that this not come to pass.

Once you understand that we in the West are ruled by high-functioning sociopaths (in the sense that they can fake empathy), then the behavior of western leaders makes perfect sense.

The question then is - what is Russia going to do about it?

Yes, Ukraine fights dirty, yes, their tactics are cynical, ruthless and brutal. What is Russia going to do about it?

Reward and punishment is the only language that a sociopath understands, but they understand this language quite well.
