Getting a ‘great deal’ on an F-35 is a contradiction in terms. The stories/videos on those things reminded me of the Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In segments of Arte Johnson pitching the tricycle he is pedaling sideways onto the sidewalk. They are evidently a serious danger only to the poor schmucks who have to fly them.
NATO has been screwing the dumb Ukro-Nazis giving them junk. The expected F-16's are old and worn out. NATO doesn't expect them to be effective. The M-1's are second rate, overweight and have a heat signature that can be seen from infrared satellites in space. I know it's a cliche for westerners to compare real life wars to fiction but this really is in fact analogous to when the Tyrell's in A Song of Ice and Fire do a massive siege on a mostly irrelevant castle so that they could look like they were helping the crown while doing nothing of substance.

Every morning before any engines are started all squadron personnel line up at one end of the flight line and slowly walk to the other end watching closely for the tiniest foreign object. Sometimes the Commander will drop a half dollar coin for a lucky walker to run across.
I was a Navy Jet Mechanic. Mark was a shipmate and a graduate of the most challenging school. Mark's school graduates nuclear power engineers. Mark is very smart to successfully complete Nuke School. I graduated tops in my class from Jet Mechanic School.
