US Accuses Russia of Launching Anti-Satellite Weapon into Space
Extra, extra, read all about it - Russia has launched a SPACE WEAPON, the Pentagon says. Russia reportedly launched at least nine satellites and some kind of space craft on Thursday, something the US calls an “inspector” spacecraft that can inspect and destroy satellites. A spokesperson for US Space Command said, “We have observed nominal activity and assess it is likely a counterspace weapon presumably capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit.” Presumably! They say this satellite was launched close to US government satellites, which Russia has done in the past. Russia, from what I can see, says yeah, we launched some stuff, we’re not going to respond to fake news, and Moscow has “always consistently opposed the deployment of strike weapons in low-Earth orbit." I genuinely don’t know whether “strike weapons” encompass “anti-satellite weapons” and whether this is a real denial or a deflection. What do you think is going on?

In the meantime, in the UN, Washington and its allies have been taking turns with Moscow and its allies to veto the other’s resolutions on promising not to militarize space. Russia voted against a US and Japanese text back in April, and the US, Japan, France and other countries voted against a Russian text yesterday. A UN press release says the texts are “similar.’ Were they? What justifications are the US and Russia offering for vetoing resolutions on ideas they ostensibly support?

Russian forces continue to advance in three regions from what I can see. The NYT suggests that Ukraine “retreating in small steps” is allowing their smaller forces to inflict huge casualties on Russian fighters. We haven’t heard anything about casualties lately. Do you have any updated estimates from both sides? And how far do you expect this Russian advance to go before it stops?

Russia has launched the tactical nuclear drills it announced back when the UK said, yeah, sure, use our weapons to hit Russia. The message was sent just by launching these drills, it seems. Is there anything in their actual execution to take note of?

Returning to the US for a moment - I wanted to get your thoughts on new legislation introduced by two Republican congressmen to extend the same employment protections to Americans serving in the Israeli army as Americans who leave work and home to serve the U.S. military. So … fighting for a foreign country is the same as serving in the US National Guard, I guess, as long as that country is Israel. The act would extend things like protections against foreclosure, default judgements in legal cases, repossession of rental property or leases and hiked interest rates while an individual is serving. It would also extend job rights and benefits that US soldiers get. Do I get to start voting in Israeli elections now? I mean, how blurry can this line get? What should this tell us?
